Six assessments · Sep to Feb
Tuesday night, the session isn't planned yet
Most youth coaches piece together a session from YouTube clips and old notes. By February nobody remembers what they've worked on or what improved. When a parent asks how their kid is doing, the answer is a shrug.
CoachIQ takes the planning off your plate and keeps a record so you can actually see what's improved.
AI-drafted, coach-owned
Here's a plan to start from
A U9 team, 60 minutes, 1v1 defending. Swap a drill, tweak a phase, or run it as-is — your call. Same components the app uses for your own plans.
1v1 Defending — U9, 60 min
Shadow & Mirror
Pairs work in a 5×5m square. One player leads with short side-to-side movements; the partner mirrors them, staying on the balls of their feet with knees soft. Switch leader every 45 seconds. Last two minutes: add a ball — the leader dribbles, the partner shadows from a half-yard away without trying to win it.
Coaching points
- ▸Stay on the balls of the feet — flat-footed defenders get beaten on the first step
- ▸Side-on body shape, never square — show the attacker your shoulder, not your chest
- ▸Eyes on the ball, not on the attacker’s feet pretending to do tricks
1v1 to a Small Goal
Two cones 12m apart form a channel 8m wide. Defender starts on the goal-line next to a mini-goal; attacker starts on the opposite cone with the ball. On the coach’s call, the attacker drives at goal and must score; the defender steps out to delay, force the attacker wide, and win the ball back. Reset every 20 seconds. Rotate pairs and swap roles every two reps.
Coaching points
- ▸First step is out and across — close the space before the attacker can lift their head
- ▸Slow down two yards before contact — sprint in and you’ll get beaten with a chop
- ▸Show them onto their weak foot, then jab in to nick the ball when they take a heavy touch
3v3 + GK — Defend the Lane
Pitch 25×18m, a mini-goal at each end, two goalkeepers. Each team plays 3 outfield. The rule: defenders cannot tackle in pairs — the player nearest the ball goes; the others cover the space behind and the most dangerous pass. If the defender wins the ball clean (no foul, no scuff), the defending team gets a 2-point goal on the next attack. Play 4-minute games, then rotate teams.
Coaching points
- ▸Nearest player presses, second player covers behind, third drops to mark the dangerous pass
- ▸Press the moment the ball comes back to the GK — that’s your trigger
- ▸After winning it, two-touch out — quick pass to a teammate, then keep moving
Jog, Stretch, and Two Questions
Slow jog around the pitch for two minutes. Static stretches: quads, hamstrings, calves, hip flexors — 20 seconds each side. Finish with a circle: ask the squad two questions — "what made it easier to win the ball today?" and "who showed you a good piece of defending today?" Reinforces what good looks like.
Coaching points
- ▸Name one teammate who defended well — peer recognition lands harder than coach praise
- ▸Pick one thing to take into Saturday — first step, body shape, or the press trigger

Why CoachIQ
Honest comparisons. Each of these is a reasonable tool; none of them does what CoachIQ does.
TacticalPad
Beautiful drill diagrams. But you're still the one picking drills and writing the plan. CoachIQ generates the plan.
FootballGPT
AI-generated sessions, but stateless. You re-describe your squad every week. CoachIQ remembers — week 12 already knows Ethan needs work on his weak foot.
ChatGPT or Claude direct
Will write a session if you prompt it well — a paragraph of context every time, no record afterwards. CoachIQ wires the prompt and the record-keeping in for you.
Drill PDFs and coaching books
Two hundred drills, pick three, hope they fit. CoachIQ does the picking and the sequencing for the squad in front of you.
